As part of an Introduction to Biology unit, students In Mrs. Causey’s and Mrs. Summerlin’s classes learned the steps of the Scientific Method and how to incorporate those steps to solve problems. In this activity, Sam (the gummy worm) cannot swim and his boat has capsized trapping his life preserver underneath. Students must remove the life preserver and place it on Sam using only the paper clips. Students first identified the problem and formed a hypothesis. They had to collaboratively brainstorm ideas for saving Sam and then put those steps into action. After performing their experiments, students completed a lab report with their conclusion and reflections.
